Joanne J.
Mcintyre
Jul 9, 1928 — Oct 12, 2015
Joanne Johnson McIntyre, 87, a resident of Clark-Lindsey Village in Urbana, died October 12, 2015 at Carle Foundation Hospital with her daughters by her side.
Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory is handling the arrangements. No funeral or services are planned.
Mrs. McIntyre was born July 9, 1928, to Sirvertus Henry and Jennie Gahagan Johnson in Bradford, PA. At an early age, she developed an interest in and talent for playing piano, and from her grade school through college years served as accompanist for a variety of choruses, choirs, and Sunday school and church services.
Mrs. McIntyre earned an A.B. degree in psychology from Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA; and a M.S. degree in clinical psychology from Pennsylvania State University in 1950. She was married in 1950 to Charles J. McIntyre, who predeceased her after 57 years of marriage.
She is survived by her daughter Beth Kaufman of Orange, CT; daughter Jennifer Sandefer and her husband Mike of Harrisville, NY; her grandchildren Daniel Kaufman and his wife Thi Van of Cambridge, MA; Emily Sandefer and her husband Ryan Goodenough of Poestenkill, NY; Jeremy Kaufman of Rensselaer, NY; and Kira Swanson and her husband Chad of Gloversville, NY. She recently took particular delight in her great-grandson, Andrew Goodenough of Poestenkill, NY. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; the beloved matriarch of an exceptionally close-knit family. In her final years, she was lovingly cared for by the remarkable staff of Meeting Your Needs.
From 1950 - 1951, Mrs. McIntyre was chief psychologist at Laurelton State Village, PA, a residential facility for women. Until 1955, she worked on a variety of special projects for Penn State. After a hiatus to raise her children, she resumed her career as a school psychologist for the Urbana School District, and as a consultant for The Reading Group. She retired in 1984. In retirement, Mrs. McIntyre enjoyed making birth samplers, Christmas stockings, cloth books and cherished dolls for her grandchildren, as well as wedding samplers and quilts for her daughters. Her grandchildren fondly remember playing spirited games of Old Maid, Cootie, Uno and croquet, as well as performing piano duets and joining their grandmother in morning exercises.
With her husband Charles, she was a founding member of the U. of I. Marquee Circle for Krannert Center, and established the Joanne J. and Charles J. McIntyre Endowment Fund for Young Artists. She and Charles frequented Krannert Center for concerts, plays and opera, and several times treated the family to performances at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
Mrs. McIntyre was a volunteer in the Yankee Ridge School library for 15 years. She also served as a volunteer reading tutor for young students, and as an usher for Youth Series at Krannert.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Joanne J. and Charles J. McIntyre Endowment Fund for Young Artists, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, 500 South Goodwin Avenue, Urbana, IL 61801. Condolences may be offered online at www.renner-wikoffchapel.com.
