Jean O.
Oberdeck
Dec 21, 1927 — Jun 10, 2016
Jean O. Oberdeck, 88, of Savoy, died June 10, 2016 at Carle Foundation Hospital. She will be dearly missed.
Jean was born December 21, 1927 in Kohler, WI, the daughter of Lucille and Harvey Schuchardt. She attended Kohler public schools, the University of Wisconsin Extension, and Valparaiso University, where she graduated with a BA in 1950. She married Chuck Oberdeck, whom she met at Valparaiso, on October 7, 1950, in Kohler, WI. He died in 2010.
She is survived by her daughter Kathryn Oberdeck, son-in-law William Munro, and two granddaughters, Fiona and Cara Munro, of Urbana; a sister, Ruth Maschke, of Cedarburg, WI; a sister-in-law, Marian Mosey, of Delafield, WI; and five nephews and a niece residing in Wisconsin, Illinois and New York.
In addition to her husband, Jean was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Carol and Kristen; a sister, Edith Forsberg and her family; and a sister-in-law, Doris Oberdeck.
After college Jean moved with her husband to Denver, CO and later to Los Angeles, CA, where she devoted many years to raising her daughters. She made countless fanciful birthday cakes and batches of cookies, lent her skills to Girl Scout troops and Sunday-School activities, cared for and decorated the family's homes, and nurtured her children's love of music and art. She and her husband were involved in many service organizations in Santa Monica, CA, where he ran a housewares store and was later a stockbroker for many years. When her daughters were older Jean worked as an accountant in the travel industry and enjoyed travelling the world with Chuck.
In 1988 Jean and Chuck moved to Santa Maria, CA, where she worked for the public school system and for the American Cancer Society. She also enjoyed gardening, playing games with her granddaughters when they visited, and touring California's Central Coast. She was an enthusiastic member of the Santa Maria Newcomers Club. In 2004, she moved to Urbana with her husband to be closer to their daughter and her family, cared lovingly for Chuck as he struggled with dementia, and enjoyed having more time with her grandchildren.
Jean's Lutheran faith was a central part of her life, from which she drew great comfort and gladness. She especially enjoyed singing in the choirs of several churches. She was an active member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Santa Monica, CA, Pacific Palisades Lutheran Church, Grace Lutheran Church in Santa Maria, CA, for which she served as treasurer, and most recently, St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Urbana. Jean was an avid tennis player and fan, and also enjoyed bicycling, walking, and exercise classes--pastimes that expressed her strong interest in healthy living. The care and love with which she cultivated the well being of family and friends will be treasured always.
A memorial service will be held 1:30 PM, Saturday, July 16 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 2200 South Philo Road, Urbana. In lieu of flowers the family requests any memorials be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
