Obituary

On the passing of Mr. James Phillips on August 5, 2007, at Carle Hospital, we honor the man, husband of 37 years, father, grandfather, friend, mentor, and associate of those who loved and cherished his companionship, support, and love for the years we were blessed to be in his presence.

The visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday, August 9, 2007 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel at 1900 South Philo Road, Urbana, IL, 61802.

The funeral services will be at 1pm Friday August 10, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church 302 West Church Street, Champaign, IL. Reverend Rick Snyder and Reverend Wally Carlson will officiate. Burial will follow at in Roselawn Cemetery in Champaign, IL immediately following the funeral services.

Mr. James Phillips was born in Denver, Colorado on July 6, 1940. He later served in the United States Marine Corp. at 29 Palms, California. He was a graduate of the University of Colorado where he received a BS and an MBA in Management Information Systems. He also attended the University of Illinois pursuing an MIS doctorate degree and was an instructor in the MBA program.

In 1968 Mr. Phillips joined the Bromley Group of Companies where he served as President and CEO of the University Resident Halls Division. Mr. James Phillips oversaw the growth of the second largest operator of private resident halls in the United States in the 1980s. He has also played a very active roll in the University of Illinois Certified Housing Group.

Mr. James Phillips, as a loyal supporter of the University of Illinois, was a member of the I Fund, Loyalty Circle, President's Council, and also inducted into Varsity I. Moreover, he was instrumental in the development of the University of Illinois summer sports camp programs.

Mr. James Phillips of Urbana, Illinois is survived by his wife, Mrs. Susan Phillips, his two daughters Jennifer and Melissa, and their respective husbands Mark and Matthew. Mark and Jennifer Whitlock reside in Huntington Beach, California with their two children, Madison and Andrew. Matthew and Melissa Jokisch reside in Urbana, Illinois with their two children William and Annabelle.
