Obituary

The "leader of our clan," James Rogers Harlan, 90,died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Rev. Michael Mulberry will officiate at a private burial at Pennington Point (IL) Cemetery,Tuesday, Feb.12,2008. A memorial service to celebrate Rogers' life will be held at Clark-Lindsey Village, Sunday, February 17th at 2:30 pm. Rogers was born on April 11, 1917 at Pennington Point, McDonough County, Illinois to William Hammer and Daisy Rogers Harlan. He married Marjorie Dale More in St. Louis, Mo. Sept. 10, 1950, who survives him. He is also survived by their daughter Patricia, son-in-law Stephen, grandsons Timothy and Christopher, and Christopher's wife Caroline. Rogers' parents and his sisters Louise Vastine and Virginia Harlan preceded him in death. Rogers served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force with the rank of Captain during the Korean conflict. Rogers attended Bradley University and graduated from the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Physics department for 22 years, retiring in 1977 as Senior Research Engineer. Rogers was an active member of the Community United Church of Christ and a member of the Urbana Rotary Club. Rogers' warmth, creativity, and commitment to others helped to foster his strong sense of community at Clark-Lindsey Village where he served as a leader, mentor, program developer, gardener, and friend. A voracious learner, Rogers bought a personal computer as soon as they became available and made extensive use of the internet for investigating genealogy, keeping up with news and weather, communicating with family and friends, and furthering his interest in politics and philosophy. He read constantly and loved to share provocative quotes and to marvel at new scientific advancements. The family wishes to acknowledge the love and support shown by its extended family of friends, community members, doctors, and medical assistants. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community United Church of Christ or to the Friendship Fund at Clark-Lindsey Village.
