Obituary

Jack Monroe Steger, son of Clarence and Maude Steger, was born 30 March 1929 in Abilene, Texas. He graduated from Wylie, Texas, High School in 1946 and from New Mexico A and M in 1951. There he excelled in football, and also played golf, baseball, and track, and was designated outstanding military cadet in Air Force ROTC. He later received a Master's Degree from Indiana University and a PhD from the University of Illinois. He married Eva Hensley in 1950 in Denver, Colorado. Their children are John Andrew Steger of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Ann Elizabeth Chrenen of Decorah, Iowa, and Susan Elaine Hayes of Gillette, Wyoming. They have five grandchildren.

Jack Steger was employed one semester as an elementary teacher in Gallup, New Mexico, and in 1951 was called into active duty in the Air Force. He served at Briggs AFB, Texas, then was transferred to Furstenfeldbruck, Germany. From 1954 to 1957 he was assigned to Indiana University as an ROTC instructor. From 1958 to 1964 he was instructor and coach at the Air Force Academy. In the Fall of 1964 he was assigned to European Headquarters, Wiesbaden, Germany until 1967. From 1967 to 1971 he served as Air Force ROTC Professor of Aerospace Studies at Grinnell College in Iowa. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1971.

From 1971 to 1976 he was employed as Department Head of Physical Education, and Director of Athletics at Monmouth College, Illinois. In 1977 he taught Kinesiology at the University of Illinois and later was employed as Manager of Sports Facilities and Campus Recreation. He retired from this position in 2004.

Memorial services will be held 2 pm Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church, Urbana. The Rev. Don Mason will officiate.

The family suggests that donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana or to Carle Hospice.
