Mrs. Sergent was born April 22, 1922 in Bement, Illinois to parents George and Nancy (Bennett) Willey. She married Wayne Sergent on Valentine's Day in 1946. He preceded her in death February 20, 1990. Survivors include daughters, Darleen Hanes (Kevin), of St. Joseph, Yvonne Griffith (Corbitt), of Urbana, Lynetta Pell, of Tolono, grandsons, Troy Dalton, Chad Dalton (Amber), Kasey Hanes, step-grandson, Corbitt Griffith III, eight great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother and sister.
After graduating from Atwood High School, Mrs. Sergent worked at Whitaker's Jewelry Store. She worked there for 47 years before retiring at the age of 78.
Irene attended Four Square Church in Urbana for many years, and had attended the Vineyard Church in Urbana for the last few years. She was very active in church when she was able and volunteered her time generously.
Mrs. Sergent always kept a busy schedule, serving as a Girl Scouts Leader and volunteering in the PTA when her daughters were young. She also helped in the community as an election volunteer for 33 years. She was an election judge, precinct committee person, and registrar judge. She enjoyed crafts, home decorating, playing cards, dancing, and playing Yahtzee.
Irene was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a "spunky" former redhead with impeccable taste. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made in Irene's honor to the Crisis Nursery or a veteran's association. Condolences may be offered online at www.renner-wikoffchapel.com.
