Howard "Ed" Matson, 71, of Champaign, died at 3:50 a.m., April 15, 2012 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Howard Edward Matson was born April 3, 1941 in Mt. Vernon, IL a son of Howard "Ray" Matson and Bernice Brownfield Matson. He married Amanda Sanchez September 14, 1970 in Urbana.

He is survived by his wife, Amanda, a daughter, Michelle (Dave) Wetzel of Champaign and two grandchildren, Anya and Calvin.

His parents and brother preceded him in death.

Ed served in the National Guard. He retired from Dominick's Finer Foods in 2001, after 28 years. He was a 24-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was a past Exalted Ruler, served as a State Americanism Chairman for many years and was a past District Deputy (DDGER). Mr. Matson was also a member of the Moose, and an avid Illini, Chicago Cubs, and Dallas Cowboys fan.

Known for his sense of humor, pride in his Irish heritage, and being always willing to help others, Ed spent his leisure time enjoying the company of his grandchildren and watching the Food Network. He will be missed.
