Herman "Bud" Edwards, 83, passed away at 7:15 A.M. on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at Heartland Healthcare Center, Champaign.
A visitation will take place from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, Urbana. There will also be a visitation held at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Jones Funeral Home, Villa Ridge, Illinois. Funeral Services will follow at 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Spencer Heights Cemetery in Mounds.
Herman was born in Mound City, Illinois on March 4, 1931 to parents Oscar and Mary Alice (Full) Edwards. They preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was his sister Mary Etta Husmann.
On June 11, 1955 Herman married Joan Mathis in Mound City, Illinois, she survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Alice Novak of Urbana, son Larry (Janice) Edwards of Flagstaff, Arizona, granddaughter, Leeanne (Randy) Watson of Mesa, Arizona and two grandsons, Brent Edwards of Anthem, Arizona and Henry Novak of Urbana.
He was a graduate of McKendree College where he earned his Bachelor's degree and Indiana University where he earned his Master's degree. For 38 years, he was a high school teacher with assignments at Maroa, Robinson, Alton and Roxana. For 15 of those years, he was a basketball coach and in 1957 his Maroa team was part of the Sweet Sixteen basketball teams. Throughout the years, Bud enjoyed many friendships with former basketball players and students. He was greatly touched by the many visits he had from them these past few years as his health declined.
Herman served in the United States Army, Quartermaster Corps at Fort Lee, Virginia.
He was an avid reader of military history, enjoyed Big Band music and liked collecting.
Herman is going to be missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Memorial contributions may be made to the Champaign County Humane Society.
