Dr. Helen Mackey Widick, 93, of Urbana passed away of natural causes at 6:30 A.M. on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Meadowbrook Health Center in Urbana.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Friday, November 20, 2015 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana. Rev. Kenneth Roedder will officiate. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 10:00 A.M.- 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Monticello Township Cemetery at 3:00 P.M.
Dr. Helen Mackey Widick was born on March 4, 1922 in Monticello, IL, the only child of Wade and Edith Grace (Mackey) Widick. Her parents and grandparents preceded her in death; she is survived by several cousins.
She graduated from Monticello High School in 1940, received an RN degree from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in 1944, and graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, IL with a BS degree in Nursing in 1951.
Dr. Widick practiced nursing for 10 years in Alton and Monticello, which included several years of teaching. Upon receiving her DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) from Scholl's College of Podiatry in Chicago in 1957, she practiced Podiatric Medicine for 45 years in Urbana at the Widick Foot Clinic. Her associates over the years included Dr. Bill Pierce and Dr. Al Nachowicz. Once Helen was well established in her practice, her mother said, "Helen used to be my daughter - now I'm Dr. Widick's mother."
Dr. Widick was a proud member of the Altrusa Club of Champaign Urbana, serving as President from 1967-1969 and also as Governor of District Six of Altrusa International from 1981-1983, former member of the Auxiliary Coast Guard, Past Worthy Matron of the Myrtle Chapter 131 of Eastern Star, Past Royal Matron of #17 Amaranth, Past Worthy High Priestess of White Shrine of Jerusalem-Mizpah #11 and Past Worthy Grand Commander of True Kindred #15. She was also a Kentucky Colonel, member of the Piatt County Museum, Champaign County Humane Society, American Podiatry Association and American Podiatry Women's Association.
She taught Sunday School for 25 years at the Grace United Methodist Church in Urbana. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, reading and travel, which she did extensively throughout her life.
