Hanns Martin W. Schoenfeld 82 of Champaign died at 5:56 a.m. Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March, 12, 2011 at the Episcopal Chapel of St. John the Divine, 1011 Wright St., Champaign; the Rev. Fr. Timothy Hallett will officiate. A reception will be held in Canterbury House adjacent to the Chapel immediately following the service.
H M Schoenfeld was born on July 12, 1928 in Leipzig/Germany as the son of Dr. Alwin Schoenfeld and his spouse Lisbeth Kirbach. He grew up in Hamburg/Germany, served in the German Army 1944-45, and he was an US PoW 1945-46. He earned an MBA (1952) and an DBA (1954) at the University of Hamburg and his Ph.D. at the Technical University of Braunschweig/Germany in 1966. He initially came to the University of Illinois on a postdoctoral exchange program in 1956 and returned in 1962 to serve as a Professor of Accountancy until his retirement. During his career he held several named professorships and received many awards for teaching and scholarly contributions. He was the only American citizen to receive the Dr. Kausch Prize for "Integrating American and European Accounting" from the University of St. Gall, Switzerland. He also was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Graz in Austria. He founded the International Section of the American Accounting Association, served as President of the Academy of Accounting Historians and taught in 25 different countries.
He married Margit Frese, Ph.D. in 1956 in Kansas City; she preceded him in death in 2005. He is survived by his daughter Gabrielle Robinson, Professor Emerita of English at IU in South Bend/IN, by his son-in law Mike Keen, Professor of Sociology at UI South Bend, and his grandson, Benedict Robinson, Professor of English at Stony Brook/NY.
