H. Frank Middleton, age 85, of Champaign, died in his sleep early Sunday, May 11, 2008, while visiting at his son's residence in Greenville, S.C.
Funeral services will be at First Presbyterian Church at 10:30 AM Friday, May 16, 2008, Rev. Ruth Clendenin officiating with burial following at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana. Military rites will be accorded at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 South Philo Road, Urbana.
Mr. Middleton was born July 29, 1922 in Urbana, son of Hollis and Ruth (Williams) Middleton. He married Betty Ann Hill on May 14, 1943 in Urbana. She preceded him in death on May 23, 1997. He is survived by sons Charles H. Middleton of Greenville, S.C., Randall L. Middleton of Denver Colorado, brothers, David Middleton of Urbana, John Middleton of Albuquerque, NM, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Carolee Middleton and Joyce Corcoran.
Mr. Middleton is a 1940 graduate of Urbana High School and received a BA from the University of Illinois in 1948 and his Law degree in 1950. He was a long time attorney in Champaign County. He also served as Assistant States Attorney of Champaign County from 1950 to 1954 and was Rantoul Village Attorney from 1957 to 1962. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana where he served as Deacon, Trustee and Elder. He was also a member and first president of Lincolnshire Fields Country Club; U of I President's Council; Life member of U of I Alumni Club; Quarterback Club and Rebounders Club; Charter member Smithsonian Associates; Founding member of American Air Museum in Britain; Life member of Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum, Rantoul; 507th Fighter Group Associates; P-47 Thunderbolt Pilot's Association; 50+ year member of American Legion Post #71; U.S. Air Force Association; Active in formation of Southern Little League and manager of Carter's Mayflower team for 6 years including winning the first Twin City Championship. He served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1946 attaining the rank of 1st Lt. He was in the air offensive in Japan, China and Ryukyus Islands. His decorations included the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon; three Bronze Stars; Air Medal; Victory Ribbon; American Theater Campaign Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal; Presidential Unit Citation memorialized in a plaque at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He was to be inducted into the Commemorative Air Force's "Combat Airman Hall of Fame" on September 19, 2008 at Midland, TX. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 602 W. Green, Urbana, 61801.
