Alberta Gladys Coon, 100 of Champaign died at 2:55 a.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Heartland Healthcare Center, Champaign.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 29, 2008 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, Urbana. The Rev. Wes Wilkey will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Coon was born on August 6, 1907 in rural Thomasboro, the daughter of Albert and Susie Jared Shumate. She married Samuel B. Coon on June 22, 1927 in Urbana; he died October 12, 1988.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law: Betty (Dave) Coon James, three grandchildren; Marv (Kim) Coon, Bonnie (Erv) Kumm and Sue (Rick) Wedig, four great grandchildren; Jennifer Gussman, Nicolas Wedig, Ryan Wedig and Karen Coon, and two great great grandchildren; Kayla and Trevor Gussman.

She was preceded in death by her son; James L. Coon and two brothers; Marion and Claude Shumate.

Mrs. Coon graduated from Urbana High School in 1925. She worked for Joseph Kuhn and the Champaign County Board of Review.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Champaign, the Hope Circle, Christian Single Adults, AARP and RSVP. She was a volunteer for the Carle Auxiliary.

Mrs. Coon enjoyed knitting, crocheting, her grandchildren and her family.
