Gertrude Brokaw McCloy, age 93, of Urbana died 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at MeadowBrook Healthcare Center, Urbana. A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Urbana Sunday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Dr. John Sims officiating. Burial will be at Summit Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Mrs. McCloy was born June 20, 1917 in Pocahontas, IA to Nellie Dayhoff Brokaw and Isaac Henry Brokaw. She married Robert Winston McCloy, August 30, 1941. They moved to Urbana on June 27, 1945 when Mr. McCloy began his career at the University of Illinois as Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. Survivors include their children: Dr. Marty Traver of Powell, Ohio; William B. McCloy of Edmonds, Washington; Peggy E. Miller of Mesa, Arizona; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Her husband, son; Robert L. McCloy and sisters, Virginia Hursh and Eleanor Grant preceded her in death.

Mrs. McCloy graduated from Christian College and the University of Missouri. She was a member of the University of Illinois Women's Club, literature and readers' groups, Reach to Recovery, the First United Methodist Church of Urbana, and Supportive Families of the Mentally Ill. She was an active patron of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. For many years, she swam regularly at IMPE, enjoyed international travel, reading, and flower arranging.
