Gerald
Lukemire
Feb 19, 1944 — Jul 1, 2017
Gerald "Jerry" Lukemire, 73, of Urbana, passed away at 2:40 p.m., Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital. Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory will be handling Jerry's cremation and arrangements. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Jerry was born February 19, 1944 in Urbana, Illinois to parents Alberta Ruggles and Wilbur Lukemire. He married Pam (Bantz) Burgstrom in April of 1974. She survives. Also surviving are two children, Warren "Chip" Lukemire and his son, of West Lafayette, Indiana, Sheri Lukemire of Tolono, Illinois, and step-son Sgt. Anthony Burgstrom (Susan) and his family, of Champaign, Illinois. Jerry is survived by four half-brothers: Larry Walker, of Champaign, Illinois, Champ Walker, of Washington, Illinois, Ron Walker, of Louisiana, and Hugh Walker, of Florida.
Jerry was preceded in death by a son, Scottie Lukemire, his parents, grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.
Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy after high school, where he remained stationed at Great Lakes as a swimming instructor to new recruits. Jerry was very proud of his service to his country and joined the AMVETS (American Veterans), an organization that serves as an advocate for U.S. veterans. He held several offices and was commander of the local AMVET Post #3, Champaign, for several years.
Following his service, Jerry worked as a laborer and helped hang the cat walk at the State Farm Center. On January 1, 1969, he began work at the Urbana Police Department, where he served as an officer for many years. During an ice-storm in 1990, Jerry was injured while taking information at the scene of an auto accident. Jerry suffered a severe head injury, which ended his active career in law enforcement and put him on disability. However, he remained a loyal member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Police Benevolent and Protective Association.
Jerry and Pam enjoyed the cruises they took to numerous islands and Mexico. Jerry's favorite pastimes were fishing, camping, bowling and watching his favorite team, the Chicago Cubs win the World Series.
