George Harry Lanter, 59, of St. Joseph, died at 4:15 p.m., Thursday, April 15, 2010 at home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at The Vineyard Church in Urbana. Rev. Cathy Vincent will officiate. Burial will be in Eden Park in Rantoul. Visitation will be 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday at Renner-Wikoff Chapel 1900 S. Philo Rd. Urbana.

George Lanter was born September 7, 1950 at Scott Air Force Base, IL a son of George J. and Kitty Billhartz Lanter. He married Rose M. Ackerman on September 1, 1973 in Rantoul, IL. She survives.

Survivors include his mother; two children Jennifer Zapf of Green Bay, WI and Adam Lanter of Springfield, IL; and four grandchildren Olivia Zapf, Riley Zapf, Simon Lanter, and Elliot Lanter; four sisters Catherine Rodick of Lebanon, IL, Bernie Wood of Mascoutah, IL, Monica McCombs of Dallas, TX, and Melissa Meise of Lebanon, IL.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Lanter was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, he worked for the U of I as a Lab Attendant for 34 years. He was a member of The Vineyard Church, on the Board of Directors for the Urbana Theological Seminary, and the Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center.

Memorials can be made to the Urbana Theological Seminary (314 E. Daniel, Champaign, IL) for the establishment of a scholarship in George's name.
