Mr. Clayton, 90, of Urbana died on Tuesday, August 28th at 7:54 p.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Chruch, 1203 W. Green St., Urbana, Illinois. Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, Urbana, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Clayton was born November 25, 1916, in Saranac Lake, New York, the eldest son of Edward H. and Grace Tew Clayton. He married Suzanne Nichols on August 20, 1949 in Syracuse, New York. She survives. He married Marian Louise Schneider on November 3, 1961 in Webster Groves, MO. She died on September 8, 2004.
Surviving are a daughter, Christine Cleaton of Herefordshire, England, her husband, Brian Cleaton, and her children, Mary and David; another daughter, Catherine Loomis of Greendale, Wisconsin, and her husband, John Loomis; and a sister, Eleanor Powers of Little silver, New Jersey, and her husband, Jack Powers.
Mr. Clayton's parents were Baptist missionaries, and Mr. Clayton spent the first 14 years of his life in Hangchow and Shanghai, China. He graduated from The Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey, and received a bachelor's and a master's degree in architecture from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. He served in the United States Coast Guard as an Ensign in World War II.
Mr. Clayton was employed as an architect for several firms and then taught at the School of Architecture at Syracuse University. Mr. Clayton was a professor of architecture at the University of Illinois from 1950 to 1985.
Mr. Clayton was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Kiwanis Club of Champaign-Urbana and Wesley United Methodist Church in Urbana.
