Obituary

George W. (Red) Armstrong, 94 of Urbana died at 12:57 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2011 at home.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at the Grace United Methodist Church, Urbana; the Rev. Herschel Kline officiating. Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Armstrong was born on February 26, 1917 in Decatur, the son of Charles Otis and Effie Mae Jesse Armstrong. He married Eula Marvene Mundell on November 10, 1940 in Fairbury, she survives.

Also surviving are two sons; Larry (Mary) Armstrong of Champaign and Mike (Lynn) Armstrong of Urbana, two daughters; Kay (Ron) Weidner of Urbana and Ann (Dave) Marriott of St. Joseph, ten grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Mr. Armstrong retired as a Supervisor at the U of I Postal Substation.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Urbana, American Legion Post 71, Urbana and the U.S. Postal Auxiliary.

He was a U.S. Army and Navy veteran of WW II, was inducted into the Urbana High School Basketball Hall of Fame, on the Allstate Basketball team, he loved gardening and won many awards both at the county and state level for his tomatoes and vegetables. An avid bowler, cook and fisherman where he would have an annual family fish fry. He loved computers, was a poet and made custom Christmas cards.

Mr. Armstrong always entered contests and won several trips, loved garage sales, along with his wife was an avid bell collector. He and wife wintered in Florida for 30 years.
