Gaylord Frederick, 87, of Champaign, passed away at 6:45 p.m., Saturday, March 5, 2016. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 9th at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 10th at the funeral home. The Urbana American Legion Post 71 will perform military rites following interment at Eastlawn Burial Park, Urbana.
Mr. Frederick was born August 1, 1928 in Philo, Illinois to parents Henry and Lula (Ott) Frederick. He married Beverly June Good March 9, 1952 at the University Place Christian Church. She passed away June 22, 2015. Survivors include son, Rick Frederick, and daughter-in-law, Terri, of Champaign, and grandchildren, Kevin, Ryan, and Alyssa "Babe" Frederick (Brad Waller). Gaylord was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, one sister, and one half-brother.
After graduating high school, Mr. Frederick enlisted in the Unites States Army, where he served in the 7th Armed Division during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Urbana American Legion Post 71 and the Urbana V.F.W. Post 630.
Gay worked for many years as a baker at Eisner's Food Store in Urbana before his employment at the University of Illinois, where he retired in 1985. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Urbana.
Gay loved the Arthur area and seeing his Amish friends, along with collecting and selling items. He cheered for the Illinois Fighting Illini and was a lifelong Cubs fan. He was a member of the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2014. He was the proud creator of the Frederick Bean Festival.
