Garland E. Nortrup of Urbana passed away at his home on Saturday, May 30, 2009, after a short illness. He was born May 7, 1925, the son of John and Faye (McAllister) Nortrup in Bluffs, Illinois. He grew up near Meredosia, Illinois and served in the Army in Italy during World War II. After attending business college in Champaign, he worked for the Champaign Post Office until his retirement. Garland is survived by his wife, Shirley J. (McKay) Nortrup, whom he married on February 11, 1956, in Chicago. He is also survived by his two children, Kevin (Brenda) Nortrup of Indiana and Kimberly Riley of Kentucky. Also surviving are his brothers, Farrel (Margaret) Nortrup of Stronghurst and Gerald (Marcella) Nortrup of Meredosia; sister Virginia Hinners of Jacksonville; grandchildren Stasi Casad of Kentucky, Jennifer Casad of Quincy, Rebekah, Abigail and Sarah Nortrup of Indiana, and Ryan Withers of Kentucky; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Nortrup was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the American Legion, and the American Postal Workers Union. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. June 7, 2009, at Grace United Methodist Church, Urbana, to which memorials may be made.
