Everett D. Abernathy, 89, of Urbana, IL, passed away at 2:30 A.M., Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Heartland Health Care Center, Champaign, IL.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M., Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign. Rev. Jim McClarey will officiate. Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana, IL, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Abernathy was born October 13, 1920, at Urbana, a son of Walter and Christine Dieterle Abernathy. He married Emma Smith on August 21, 1944 in East St. Louis. She preceded him in death on January 6, 1993.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a sister, Rose Appl.

Mr. Abernathy graduated from Fisher High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he worked as a barber until 1951. He then served with the U. S. Army during the Korean War until 1953. After the Korean War, Mr. Abernathy worked as a barber for another fifteen years, he then worked as a postal carrier in Urbana for 26 years and later drove a school bus in Urbana, for 17 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 71 and AMVETS Post #3.
