Obituary

Eleanor Maxine Brown MacMillan, 90, of Urbana, passed away after a stroke on December 17 at Provena Covenant Medical Center. While Eleanor lived in Urbana for the past five years, she spent most of her life in Iowa. She was born on June 29, 1918, to Arthur E. and Pearl Troester Brown in Millville Township, near Guttenberg, Iowa. She graduated in 1935 from Guttenberg High School, Guttenberg, Iowa, as valedictorian of her class. She received a teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College and a B.A. from the State College of Iowa (now, the University of Northern Iowa). At the beginning of her career, she taught in Andrew, Iowa. She later taught in Castalia, Iowa, and went on to teach for 23 years at Hoover Elementary School in Mason City, Iowa, before retiring in 1982. Eleanor devoted herself to family. She married Harlan Smith MacMillan on February 6, 1938. Over the years, the couple enjoyed a shared faith in God, long walks, gardening, and traveling together. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary before Harlan passed away in 2001. Eleanor was a lifelong learner and an inspiration to all of her family. She was the family historian and archivist, keeping detailed records and written descriptions of family events. She had a deep faith and conveyed that to her family by her actions and deeds. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana. Surviving are two daughters and a son: Mary Muller and her husband, Glenn, of Urbana, IL; Susan Anderson and her husband, Kendall, of Bloomington, MN; Dr. David MacMillan and his wife, Barbara, of Osprey, FL. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Carol Willingham and husband, Doug, of Salado, TX.; Catherine Simon and husband, Randy, of Winterset, IA.; Charles Meyer and wife, Janell, of Postville, IA.; George Meyer and wife, Suzanne, of New Prague, MN.; Christopher MacMillan of Orlando, FL; Meredith Dendinger and husband, Mark, of Simsbury, CT., Elizabeth Muller of Ithaca, NY, and Sarah Muller of New York City. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren and two sisters: Helen King and husband, Jay, of Meriden, CT. and Dorothy Small and husband, George, of Wapello, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Harlan. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on January 10, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church in Urbana. A family memorial service and burial will be held at a later date in Mason City, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana, 602 W. Green St.,for the Deacon fund.
