Dr. Kenneth E. Harshbarger, 93, of Urbana, died at 7:55 PM Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel & Crematory 1900 S. Philo Rd. Urbana. Rev. Don Orr will officiate. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Tuesday May 20, 2008 at the funeral home.
Kenneth E. Harshbarger was born November 12, 1914 in Coles County a son of Harry H. and Maude E. Whipple Harshbarger. He served in the Army during WWII as a nutrition officer. After the war he was sent to Berlin to help set up a nutrition program. He retired from the Army as Col of Medical Service Corp. Kenneth married Nadine Renner who preceded him in death in 1956. He then married Elsie J. Brown August 31, 1957 in Arcola. She preceded him in death on October 14, 2005.
He is survived by three children Col. Keven E. (Tracy) Harshbarger of Tucson, AZ, Dr. Kent E. (Kelly) of Dayton, OH, and Karen E. Harshbarger of Urbana. A daughter in law Joan (Lee) Harshbarger of Champaign, a sister Norma Jean Krone of Urbana, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son Lee Harshbarger, two brothers, one sister and a grandson.
Dr. Harshbarger attended the U of I receiving a PhD in Agriculture. He was a Professor of Agriculture at the U of I for 40 years. He retired in 1982 as the Head of Dairy Science Department. After retirement he went to Indonesia as an advisor for US AID in higher education. Kenneth was a member of Webber St. Church of Christ and First Christian Church in Champaign. He was a member of the U of I Faculty Bowling League since 1939, the American Dairy Association, Elks Club of Champaign Urbana, and former Toast Masters of Urbana, volunteered at Food for Seniors for many years, and enjoyed his friendships at Circle of Friends.
