Dr. Janardan P. Kukreti, 103, of Champaign passed away at home on Monday, May 23, 2016. He was surrounded by his family. Dr. Kukreti was born on May 1, 1913 in the village of Goil in Uttarakhand, India. He was married on June 24, 1934 to Hemlata Kukreti, who passed away on March 27, 2005. He is survived by his five children, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and extended family in India. He completed his studies in India at Allahabad University in 1934 and went on to receive his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Lahore Veterinary School in 1940. In the fall of 1960, he traveled to the United States to obtain his Masters at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. He later went on to teach at UIUC in the College of Veterinary Medicine. He retired from the university in 1986 at the age of 73. Dr. Kukreti was beloved by his family and his community alike. He will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity, generous nature, and kind spirit. He was very proud to have joined the centenarian club when he turned 100 years old. He kept in shape with daily walks and by practicing yoga. He was often asked for the secret to his good health. Here it is in his own words: "Engage in some hobby, do some voluntary work, etc. Feel and enjoy with your children and grandchildren. This is the way to add life to your years, as well as years to your life. But old age is only good if the health is good. For good health the prescription is: EXERCISE, watch your weight & B.P., relax, and do things in moderation, plus 3 Fs - good FOOD, good FAMILY, and good FRIENDS. Mens sana in corpore sano (Latin) - A healthy mind is a healthy body. Use it or lose it."
