Dorothy Eva Rachliss Altman died on August 16, 2009 in Meadowbrook Health Care Center, Urbana, IL. She was born on January 12, 1914, in Detroit, Michigan, daughter of Dr. Nathan Ascher Rachliss and Hannah Citron Rachliss. She moved to New York in 1928 where she graduated from Hunter High School, the Drake Business School, and Hunter College. She later received an MS in education from SUNY New Paltz. From the 1950s until her retirement in 1977 when she moved to Urbana, she worked for the Monticello, N.Y. Central School district as an elementary school teacher in Wurtsboro, NY and reading coordinator for the district.
She was a past president of Wurtsboro, N.Y. PTA, a scout leader, a member of the UIUC Cosmopolitan Club, and a World Heritage Museum and Krannert Art Museum docent. She played the piano and painted in oils and water colors.
She is survived by children Mark (Judith) Altman of Oceanside, N.Y., and Nancy Diamond (Harold) of Urbana, IL, grandchildren Andrew (Kristen) Diamond of Oak Park, IL, Alisa (Brett) Rosenblatt of Smithtown, N.Y., Michael (Cari) Altman of Coconut Grove, FL, and Seth Altman of Goshen, N.Y. Her great-grandchildren are Nathan and Joshua Diamond, Noah and Jack Rosenblatt and Maya Altman. She was preceded in death by a sister Edith Zussman and a grandson Steven Diamond.
