Donald Lou Kelley, of St. Joseph, formerly of Urbana, passed away Friday, November 6, 2009 at Carle Hospital in Urbana, after a lengthy illness. He was 82. Visitation with the family will take place at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 11, immediately prior to the services at 1:00 p.m. at the Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, Urbana. Burial with military honors will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens, near Mahomet.
Mr. Kelley was born on June 27, 1927 in Urbana, the son of Thomas Benjamin Kelley and Imogene Esther (Sally) Hinners Kelley. He attended Urbana schools. While at Urbana High School, Kelley played varsity football and was on the school wrestling team.
On April 3, 1955 in Urbana, Donald married Shirley Alberta Anderson, of Homer. She survives. Also surviving Mr. Kelley are his four sons and their families: Michael and Becky Kelley of St. Joseph, and their children; Christopher, Erin, and Kayla; Kevin and Connie Kelley, of Sarasota, Florida and their daughter; Rachel; Timothy and Kathy Kelley, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and their sons; Zachary and Andrew; and Kerry Kelley and his fiancAC., Wynne Schiera, of Naperville and his daughter, Alyson. Mr. Kelley also has two great grandsons, Hayden Henkelman and Logan Kelley, both of St. Joseph. Mr. Kelley is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Kelley Ovelgoener, of Pleasant Village, Illinois.
Donald was a Corporal in the 1st Calvary Division of the United States Army during the Korean War and spent 18 months in South Korea. He worked as a brick mason, and worked on the construction of many of the buildings in the Champaign-Urbana area. He was a life member in the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers, having held membership in that union for over 50 years. Mr. Kelley was also a Life Member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #1288 in Champaign.
Donald was very active in C-U Little League, coaching several teams to League championship tournaments in the 60's - 70's. He served on the Board of Directors of the C-U PeeWee football and was a Cub Scout leader. He participated in the Urbana PTA and Booster Clubs. Mr. Kelley enjoyed all sports, especially local high school and UI games.
Donald Kelley possessed an incredible sense of humor. His family and many friends will miss his quick wit and hardy laugh. Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Kelley can be made to the C-U Dialysis Center, the C-U Little League, or the Cub Scouts.
