Dolores
Shumway
Oct 14, 1929 — Dec 21, 2017
After a long and valiant struggle, Dolores (Dee) Gail Shumway, 88, of Urbana, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2017 in the presence of her son and Peg and Roger Wade, her dear friends and caretakers. A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, January 4th, 2018 at the Community United Church of Christ at 805 S. Sixth Street, Champaign, IL. Funeral services will be held at the Church at 10:00 AM, following the visitation. A brief graveside service will be held immediately after at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.
Dee was born October 14, 1929 in Decatur, Illinois to Glenn K. and Farrell (Staley) Benard. Dolores married the love of her life, Stanley Guy Shumway on her birthday in 1950. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and younger son, Scott Shumway. Survivors include one son, Stan Shumway, of Annapolis, Maryland, her granddaughters Ashley Fisher (Michael) of Baltimore, MD and Lauren Cotter (Kevin) of Arlington, VA, and two great-grandchildren, Sadie and Christopher Fisher.
Dee graduated from Danville High School and studied business administration prior to her marriage. A devoted wife and mother, Dee took several years off to raise her sons, then resumed her career and worked more than forty years in various capacities. After an early retirement necessitated by her role as final caretaker for her son Scott, Dee devoted her intellect and energy to several service and non-profit organizations including, her church, PEO, Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem and the Presence Volunteer Program.
Ever generous, both spiritually and materially, Dee never passed up an opportunity to provide a helping hand to those in need. For her family and friends, she was the pole star for right and wrong and the embodiment of unconditional love.
