Obituary

Cynthia June Combs, 53, of Champaign died of injuries at 4:30 P.M., Monday, March 7th, 2011.

Cindy was born July 25, 1957 in Chicago, IL but moved to Jacksonville, IL to attend the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. Two years following her graduation in 1979 she moved to the Champaign area where she lived with a close family friend, Alene Landreth. Ms. Landreth played an important role in Cindy's life and was vital in connecting her with the Developmental Services Center in 1983, where she met her soul mate, David Combs. The two were married in 1986 and from that time on Cindy has been a dear and active member in the Combs family.

Cindy was loved by all who knew her and in return shared with the world her kind and compassionate ear, a beautiful singing voice, and an enduring love for her husband, David. The devotion the couple had for each other was as palpable as they were recognizable. Cindy and David could be seen peddling in unison around town on their tandem bicycle.

An outspoken advocate for herself and others with disabilities, Cindy was a leader in many community organizations and groups at the Developmental Services Center where she worked for many years. Musically gifted, Cindy sang in two local choirs - Parkland Pops and the Parkland Chorus and also played the piano and accordion. She and her husband participated in the Best Buddies organization and were long-time members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Champaign. She enjoyed listening to books on tape and once described herself as sweet, lovely, and wonderful to be with. Those who knew her would truly agree. She is survived by her husband David Combs and his parents Mary Ann and Gary Combs of Paxton IL, and their children, Deborah Rodaway, Theresa Burgess, Lisa Adamson, Katherine Combs, and Amy Combs, as well as a very special nephew, Gary Combs of Paxton IL and many much-loved nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a sister, Barbara Kalley of Quinlan, TX and a brother, Craig Kalley of Quinlan, TX, her stepfather, Robert Shannon of Quinlan, TX, and a second cousin, Jackie Bluhm of Dallas, TX.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, March 15th, 2011 at the Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana, IL. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M., Monday, March 14th, at the funeral home.

Donations can be sent to the "David Combs Recovery Fund" at First State Bank, 101 Windsor Rd, Champaign, IL, 61820. Phone number, 217-239-3000.
