Obituary

Constance (Connie) Y. Marigold, 86 of Urbana died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

The Rite of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017 at The Chapel of St. John the Divine, 1011 South Wright Street, Champaign; with the Rev. Sean Ferrell officiating. Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Connie was born June 30, 1930 in Toronto, Canada, the daughter of Donald A. and Beatrice Allen Young.

She earned a B.A. with first-class honors in Modern Languages and Literatures from the University of Toronto, in 1952. She did graduate work on a French Government Scholarship at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1952-53.

She married Gordon Marigold in 1953 and moved to the U.S., where Gordon's first teaching position was at the University of Virginia (1953-56), then to Union College, Kentucky where they lived for 35 years before retiring to Urbana in 1991. At Union College, Connie taught French and German and operated the first foreign language lab in Kentucky (after UK) and developed computer drills to accompany German textbooks used at the college. She spent many summers doing research in Germany and readying the results of this research for publication.

She was passionately interested in classical music and a longtime supporter of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.

Connie and Gordon celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 2003. Gordon died in 2007 and Connie moved to Clark-Lindsey Village in 2008.

She became a naturalized citizen in 2008.
