Obituary

Charles E. "Chuck" Oberdeck, 83, of Urbana died at 2:09 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Illini Heritage, Champaign.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., June 12, 2010 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 2200 S. Philo Rd, Urbana. The Rev. Robert Rasmus will officiate.

Mr. Oberdeck was born April 14, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Elsa and Edmund Oberdeck. He attended parochial and public schools in Cleveland. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 1945 until July 1946, and then earned a BA at Valparaiso University.

He married Jean Schuchardt on October 7, 1950, in Kohler, Wisconsin. She survives.

Survivors also include his daughter Kathryn Oberdeck, her husband William Munro, and their daughters Fiona and Cara Munro, of Urbana; and two sisters, Doris Oberdeck, of Santa Maria, California, and Marian Mosey, of Delafield, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters, Carol and Kristen Oberdeck.

After college, Mr. Oberdeck was a sales representative for HASCO, Inc., a hardware wholesaler in Denver, Colorado. In 1954 he became owner and manager of Nittenger's (later Oberdeck's), a retail store in Santa Monica, California featuring china, silverware, and gifts. In 1963 he became an account executive with E.F. Hutton, and in 1970 became manager of their Santa Monica office. From 1976 to 1989 he was an assistant vice president and portfolio manager for E.F. Hutton.

In preparation for retirement, Mr. Oberdeck and his wife moved in 1988 to Santa Maria, where he "retired" a year later. He served on the City Planning Commission of Santa Maria from 1995 to 1997 and as Fifth District Planning Commissioner for the County of Santa Barbara from 1997 to 2002. In 2004 Mrs. Oberdeck moved to Urbana to be closer to their daughter and family.

Mr. Oberdeck was a member of the Lion's Club of Santa Monica for 25 years and served as President of the Santa Monica Boys (now Boys and Girls) Club. In Santa Maria he was a member of Toastmasters and the Newcomers and Breakfast Rotary Clubs, serving in the latter as Treasurer and President. He was also Chair of the Senior Allocations Committee of United Way and president of Grace Lutheran Church. In Urbana he was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Mr. Oberdeck enjoyed worldwide travel as well as fishing, woodworking, photography, cooking, bicycling and tennis. His can-do attitude, sense of humor, and devotion to his family will be dearly remembered.
