Charles Walter King Sr. 83 of Champaign died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2008 at Carle Arbours, Savoy after a 10 year illness.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, Urbana. Chaplain Robin King will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 7:45 p.m. Monday by Western Star Lodge #240 A.F. & A.M. Champaign.
Charles was born at Burnham Hospital, Champaign on January 19, 1925. He was the son of Charles W. and Ardis M. Brown King. He leaves one brother; Harry Lyle (Olive) King of Champaign. He leaves his wife Marjory Shannon whom he married on August 20, 1948 in Champaign and three children; Jessie L. King of Champaign, Marjorie E. (Ross) Veach of Urbana and Charles W. (Mary) King Jr. of Ashland, five grandchildren; Jason Dalton, David King, Tommy King, Christopher King and Rachel King, one great-grandson; Darrin Lund.
Charlie was a baker and worked for more than 43 years at the Purity Sunbeam Baking Co. in Champaign.
He was president of his local labor union 316 for several years. He was a member of his credit union board for many years. He was both a coach and referee for little league for the years his son was involved. H e always played all of his players.
Charlie was a 32nd degree mason and belonged to Western Star Lodge #240 A.F. & A.M. Champaign and both the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Danville and the York Rite bodies of Champaign.
He loved animals and nearly always carried dog biscuits in his pocket which he freely dispensed to a devoted canine following.
He was a great Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed Illinois and Chicago Bears football, golf, basketball, music, fishing and travel. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
