Charles A. Halpin, 82, passed away with family by his side Thursday, August 23, 2012 after confronting a battle with cancer. Charles was born June 25, 1930 in Gary, Indiana. Friends are welcome to gather at Renner-Wikoff Chapel Monday, August 27 at 5:45 p.m. for a prayer service, followed by a visitation from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. to visit and reminisce with family. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Urbana, at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2012. Fr. Joseph Hogan will officiate. Those attending are invited to share lunch immediately after in the Parish Center. Burial at Grandview Memorial Gardens will follow the luncheon.
Family traditions and personal friendships were the essence of Charlie's life. He lived these values with his much loved wife, Helen, for over 60 years.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, four children: Mary Helen Williams (Steve), Charlie Halpin, Ann Bell (Dan) and Joseph Halpin (Michele), four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and three sisters: Ellen Firme, Alice Halpin and Myra Halpin. He was preceded in death by a daughter.
He served proudly in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married Helen M. Koenig in Dubuque, Iowa on January 26, 1952. He ran a small business in Champaign, Charles Halpin Hairdresser. He retired from the University of Illinois as Director of Campus Parking and Transportation.
He enjoyed fishing in small ponds and big lakes with his buddies. Their fishing tales are legendary. He was a charter member of Candlestick Lane in Urbana. He was a creator of memories and had a kind word and smile for everyone.
