URBANA - Carolyn W. Green, 84, died Friday (August 26, 2011) at her home in Urbana.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 1, at Clark-Lindsey Village, 101 W. Windsor Road, Urbana. Overflow parking will be available at the church parking lot across the street with shuttle service provided by Clark-Lindsey Village.
Carolyn Wildman was born December 13, 1926, the only child of Louis Mandeville and Isabel Henley Wildman.
She married Frederick S. (Fred) Green on December 23, 1949 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on October 10, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her step-mother, Tena Wildman.
Carolyn is survived by her three sons, Louis M. Green, Frederick S. Green, Jr. and James D. Green (Bianca), all of Champaign; and two granddaughters, Stella and Maris Green.
Carolyn lived in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana during her childhood. She graduated from Chicago Amundsen High School in 1945 as class salutatorian.
Carolyn graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She received Bronze Tablet recognition for academic achievement and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Carolyn was active with the University Y.W.C.A. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta social sorority and Phi Upsilon Omicron National Honor Society, and remained involved in both organizations over her lifetime. Carolyn was employed by Carson Pirie Scott & Co. in downtown Chicago during her college years. After graduation, she taught the Beginning Textile course at the university in the early 1950's.
Carolyn was a homemaker. In addition to raising her children she was supportive of her husband in his long judicial career, including actively participating in his contested elections for office.
Carolyn was also involved in the following organizations: Champaign County Y.M.C.A. (Board Member), Garwood Home (Board Member), Junior League of Champaign-Urbana, Social Science Club of Champaign-Urbana, Chapter AR of PEO, Monday Investors Group, and the Carle Hospital Auxiliary. She chaired Women's Day at the University of Illinois in 1976.
Carolyn was a member of the University of Illinois Foundation's President's Council and the Carle Foundation's Circle of Friends. She was a life member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association. Carolyn was a devoted University of Illinois basketball fan and a member of the Illini Rebounders Club.
Carolyn moved to Clark-Lindsey Village in January 2009. She appreciated her many friends there, both new and old, among both the residents and staff. She wanted to thank them for helping make the last years of her life much better than she could have ever anticipated.
Carolyn's death was due to complications resulting from scoliosis which was first diagnosed during adolescence in an era before corrective surgery was an option. Throughout her life she was dedicated to maintaining her health through nutrition and exercise. She particularly enjoyed swimming. Her courage and determination was an inspiration to her family.
Carolyn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana for nearly 60 years.
