Obituary

William A. "Bill" Parks, 91, of Urbana died at 4:46 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Center, Urbana. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 5, 2011 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel 1900 S. Philo Rd. Urbana, the Rev. Ed Potts will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Mayview where military rites will be accorded by Champaign VFW Post 5520. A reception will be held at Renner-Wikoff Chapel one hour prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Mr. Parks was born February 14, 1920 in Champaign, a son of Carl A. and Cora M. (Defibaugh) Parks. He married Evelyn Annette Bensken on August 22, 1942 in Alexandria, Louisiana. She preceded him in death on January 16, 2011. He is survived by a brother, Richard A. Parks of Visalia, CA; six grandchildren, Christina Bethel (Kelly) of Columbia, MO, John Parks (Donna) of Urbana, Kathleen Neufeld (Blake) of San Tan Valley, AZ; Allison Hensleit of San Leandro, CA; Carl Parks (Heather) of Sidney; Meredith Ponce (Tomas) of San Carlos, CA; eight great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, John David Parks, Richard Carl Parks, and William A. Parks Jr.; and two brothers, Kenneth Parks and Robert Parks. Mr. Parks was a 1939 graduate of Urbana High School and was member of the Urbana High School Sports Hall of Fame. He served in the 106th Cavalry, and in the Army Air Corps during WWII and flew 66 combat missions as a B-24 Liberator pilot in the "Jolly Rogers" 90th Bomb Group in the Pacific theater. He was Chief Sanitarian for the C-U Public Health Department, retiring in 1982, and was a member of the New Life Christian Fellowship Church in Urbana and American Legion Post 24 in Champaign. Bill enjoyed fishing, golf, and gardening. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.
