Bette Behr Hughes died Tuesday, May 31, after 76 years of a wonderful life. She was born in Sanford, FL and grew up in LaGrange, GA. Bette was the second oldest of six children of her father, Harry Shames Behr and mother, Marie Hallbauer Behr. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Randy Hughes, daughter, Deborah Ziegenhorn (Eric), son, Eric Hughes (Patti), and daughter, Melinda Hughes (Lisa). She is also survived by her older brother, Jake Behr (Dean), and younger sisters, Daryl Nemo (Sandy) and Zelda Tenenbaum (Sheldon). Bette was predeceased by her son, Stephen Goodrich, sister, Donna Zoe Behr, and brother, Jonathan Behr. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Amy and Evan Hughes, who were her "heart" as they say in the South. Bette was a twenty-year Master Gardener (MG), and her garden was a showcase of the 1998 and 2011 MG Garden Walks. She wrote articles for the MG newsletter and the Greenhouse magazine, judged at 4H competitions and at the Champaign and Fisher County fairs. She was always willing and enjoyed speaking about garden topics. Her travels with Randy took her across North America, Europe, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Australia, where she would make journal notes and report on interesting new gardening ideas.
