Betty Smith
Golladay
Jun 5, 1921 — Mar 31, 2016
Betty June (Brooks) Smith Golladay, 94, of Urbana passed away at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 31st, 2016 at Carle Foundation Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 4th, 2016 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Champaign.
Betty was born June 5th, 1921 on the family farm, which was located on Philo Rd., in Urbana, Illinois to parents James Henry and Elizabeth (Burnett) Brooks. They preceded her in death. Betty married Robert M. Smith in 1942. They had two daughters, Sharon (Smith) Franks, of Urbana, Illinois and Linda (Smith) Brown, of Covington, Indiana. After 12 loving years of marriage, Robert passed away in 1954. Though heartbroken, Betty remained a strong parent to her daughters. In 1975, Betty married Wesley Golladay. He passed away in 1985.
In addition to her two daughters, Betty is survived by a stepdaughter, Donna Golladay McIntire, of Sidney, Illinois, grandchildren, Joshua Franks, of Urbana, Illinois, Christine Brown, of Fishers, Indiana, and John Brown, of Williamsport, Indiana. Great grandchildren, Samantha and Kyle Bishop, and Kaylee and Sharlee Brown also survive her. Betty's beloved kitties, Sissy and Dee Dee, survive. Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Leonard Brooks and stepson, Tom Golladay.
After graduating from Urbana High School in 1939, Betty began working at C.S. Johnson and Co. in Champaign. After marrying Robert, she began working part-time at the U of I Stenographic Services. She completed her career as Administrative Clerk at the University of Illinois in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and remained in that position for over 30 years. She retired in 1984.
Betty's passions were genealogy and Illinois and Illini sports. She was a research volunteer at the archives of the Urbana Public Library. She was an avid sports fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and the Fighting Illini. She was delighted to be selected as an honorary coach during an Illini basketball game at the Assembly Hall alongside Lon Kruger, then U of I basketball coach (now coach at the University of Oklahoma). Betty was also a lover of crafts, and enjoyed doing needlework.
Mrs. Golladay's family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Preetham Muskula, nurses Tim and Michelle, and aid Rommel at Carle Clinic's Tower Six for their tender, attentive care of Betty at the end of her life.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Honor the Chief Society, of which Betty was a longtime member and longtime fan of its symbol, Chief Illiniwek. Condolences may be offered online at www.renner-wikoffchapel.com.
