Minnie Bernice Johnson (Toot) passed away at home with her family by her side, on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at the age of 93.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel in Urbana. Pastor Daniel Putman will officiate. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign, after the funeral.
Bernice was born on August 11, 1923 in Champaign. She was the daughter of Bessie L. Burge Richardson and Herman Richardson. They preceded her in death. On June 20, 1940 she married Edward A. Johnson in Urbana; he passed away on April 10, 1992. Also preceding her in death were two sons: David Johnson and Charles (Chuck) Johnson, one daughter, Carolyn Johnson and one granddaughter, Sueann Johnson.
She is survived by children; Nancy L. Gourley (Howard) of Urbana, Tammy L. Colee (Tim) of Urbana and Jeffrey D. Johnson (Lori) of Mahomet. Her sister Frieda Humes of Urbana,daughter in law Barbara Johnson of Urbana, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, two step grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren also survive her.
Most of her life she worked at Culard Department on Main St. in Champaign. She worked at White Line Laundry for ten years and Chief Illini Motel for seventeen years, babysat and took in laundry to iron for families and for six years worked as the head cook for the Foundation of Nursing.
Bernice and Edward loved square dancing, bowling and archery shooting. They won many trophies in all three. She was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame on April 3rd of 1999. She enjoyed traveling with her sisters and her best friends; they would go to Cubs/Cardinals games, casinos or take a day trip with the Senior Citizens of Urbana. But Bernice's favorite thing to do was to spend time with her family.
She was baptized at Grace Baptist Church, after leaving the church she attended Vineyard Church in Urbana.
The family would like to thank Carle Hospice for the wonderful care given to Bernice and her family during Bernice's final days.
