Barbara Jean Barnes Chaille, 82, of Mahomet, formerly of North Vernon, Indiana, passed away on Sunday morning, July 8, 2012 at Country Health Care in Gifford, IL.

Barbara was born December 15, 1929 in Ilion, New York, the only daughter of Harold W. Barnes and Illa Mae Ferguson Barnes. She graduated from Elkhart Senior High School in 1947 and from Purdue University in 1951 with a degree in Food Science. She was employed for 42 years as a registered dietitian most extensively at Mascatatuck State Developmental Center, in Jennings County. She retired from Peers and Associates as a Dietary Consultant where she enjoyed serving nursing homes throughout Indiana.

On August 25, 1962 she married Paul R. Chaille of North Vernon, IN who passed away August 12, 2006. Barbara and Paul were long time residents of rural Jennings County, IN. She was also preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her son Brian Chaille (Elaine) and grandsons Gabriel and Christian of Champaign.

In Jennings County she was an active member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church where she enjoyed leading choir, teaching Sunday School and organizing various programs. She was also an active Cub Scout leader. After her husband's death she moved to Champaign-Urbana to be close to family and participate in Grandma activities. She attended Stratford Park Bible Chapel and was active in Bible studies and ladies functions while she was able.

She was a warm and engaging person and had a special knack for making new friends and helping them feel special and cared for, remembering those little things about their lives that most of us so quickly forget. She never knew a stranger. She enjoyed making friends at her various residences including Round Barn Manor, Prairie Winds, and Bridlebrook Assisted Living in Mahomet (where she was the president of the resident's council) and even in the short time she resided at Country Health Care in Gifford.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm Friday, July 13, 2012 at Renner-Wikoff Funeral Home in Urbana, IL with Ken Raymond officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

Funeral services in Indiana will be at Bass and Gasper Funeral Home in Westport, Indiana at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 16, 2012 with visitation Sunday evening from 5:00 to 6:00 pm and on Monday from 1:00 to 2:00 pm prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
