Arthur Thomas Johnson, 93, of Urbana passed away at 6:50 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at his residence.

Arthur was born November 26, 1923 in Rockford, Illinois, the son of Arthur Edward Johnson and Helen (Nellie) Ryan Johnson. In 1946 he married Joyce Sandeen in Woodstock, Illinois. He graduated from Rockford West High School in 1941, served in the US Army from 1943 to 1944, graduated from Beloit College in 1948 with a degree in economics, received a master's degree from Rockford College in 1956, and took additional graduate work at Northern Illinois University.

Johnson was an educator in the Rockford area for over 36 years, including serving as Superintendent of Rockford Public Schools from 1974 to his retirement in 1984. From 1984 to 1987 he was Executive Secretary of the Civic League of Winnebago County, Illinois. Over the years he served on numerous boards of directors for various civic and community groups. He moved to Urbana, Illinois in 2003.

Known to his family and friends as Art, he was an avid reader and life-long learner. He was also known to bring disparate groups of people together, aided by a quick sense of humor and a generous supply of chocolate.

Art is survived by his wife Joyce Sandeen Johnson of Urbana, Illinois, sister Elizabeth Ann Johnson of Urbana, Illinois, daughter Catherine Ann Webber of Champaign, Illinois, and three grandchildren: Wendy Webber of Champaign, Illinois, Christopher (Anne) Webber of New York, New York, and Alexandra Webber of Chicago, Illinois.

A memorial service will be held at Clark-Lindsey Village in Urbana, Illinois on Saturday, November 11th at 2:00pm. The family has kindly requested that any expressions of sympathy be made to Clark-Lindsey Village, Inc.
