Arlene Sweedler, 80, died Monday (December 17, 2012) in Urbana. Arlene Sweedler was born March 27, 1932 in St. Louis, MO, daughter of Frank and Florence Smith. She married Daniel Sweedler on September 17, 1955 in Hempstead, NY. Surviving are her daughter, Sarah Sweedler, her husband Nathaniel Wyatt and their two daughters, Sophia and Alexandra of San Francisco, CA; son, Jonathan V. Sweedler, his wife Kathryn Sweedler and their three sons, Benjamin, Robert, and Jeffrey of Urbana, IL; and son David S. Sweedler and his wife Jennifer Frayher and their two daughters, Irina and Rory of Louisville, CO. Arlene has two surviving brothers, Frank V. Smith, Jr. of North Carolina and Gary Smith of Washington. They and their families provided loving support throughout her life. She was preceded in her death by her half-brother Gordon V. Smith, and her husband Daniel Robert Sweedler. Arlene Sweedler received an M.D. from Yale in 1958, where she met her husband Daniel Sweedler. After a residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York, she spent several years working in Japan. Arlene and Daniel Sweedler then started a medical practice in Livermore CA, where they raised their family. During retirement, she lived in Tucson AZ and Urbana, IL. Lifelong passions included desert gardening, quilting, her cat Archy, and her family. Memorial donations may be made to the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Urbana IL, or to the Tohono Chul Park, Tucson AZ.
