Obituary

Alfred G. Harms 85 of Champaign, IL, died at 12:15 P.M., Saturday, August 19, 2006 at the Carle Arbours Nursing Home, Savoy, IL, following an extended recovery period from heart surgery.

There will be no services, Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory Urbana, IL is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Harms was born on October 4, 1920 in Minonk, IL, the son of Tjark and Lilly Oltman Harms. He married Ruth A. Henderson she survives.

Also surviving are; two sons, Alfred G. (Gina) Harms Jr. of Sanford, Florida and Thomas Lee (Maggie) Harms of Greeley, Colorado, one daughter; Marcia Jane (George) Edwards of Austin, Texas, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

A member of "The Greatest Generation," he served as a Naval Aviator flying PBM Mariner aircraft throughout the Pacific during WW II. After the war, he graduated from the University of Illinois and then farmed for many years near Monticello, IL. He later served as a Professor of Agriculture Economics at the University of Illinois, including multiple overseas assignments to India, Africa and South America. He traveled the world extensively, but always remained a proud resident of central Illinois.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association under the direction Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, 1900 South Philo Road, Urbana, Illinois 61802.
