Hubert D. Woolen, 95, of Champaign died at 7:25 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2018 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel in Urbana. Rev. Jerry Nichols will officiate. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 10:00 -11:00 a.m., at the funeral home.
Hubert was born on January 30, 1923 in Sullivan, IL, the son of Wallace Woolen and Jennie (Walton) Woolen. He married Norma Jeanne Stephens on January 25, 1946 in Washington D.C.
Surviving are four daughters; Linda (Rich) Johnson of Princeton, IL, Cheri (Tom) Garcier of Monticello, IL, Rebecca (Will) Marshall of Oswego, IL and Robin Burch of Champaign, nine grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Siblings; Latricia Lewis of Urbana and George (Sharon) Lewis of Champaign also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne, one son Danny Dean and one sister.
Hubert enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and received his diploma from Urbana High School while in the service. He retired from the University of Illinois in Operations and Maintenance in 1983 after 29 years. Prior to that he owned Woolen’s paint store in Urbana and was an independent contractor. He was also well known for teaching a Painter Apprenticeship Program for Painters Local 363.
Hubert was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Champaign, life member of the VFW Post 5520 and a member of their Color Guard. He also belonged to the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion Post 71.
